About This Treatment

Cost per treatment will be determined upon consultation with Dr.Mia or Elfrieda.

Myofascial pain remains a challenging chronic pain condition in clinical practice. Many patients suffer with chronic muscle stiffness, trigger points, tension headaches and migraines due to these constant symptoms.

Physiotherapists adopt a strategy that is holistic and patient specific. Subjective and objective assessments will reveal the likely cause of your symptoms and treatment will be dependant on the needs of the patient.

Soft tissue massage, myofascial release, posture control, stretches, exercises, ergonomic analysis, dry needling, taping, joint mobilisation, electrotherapy all form part of a comprehensive approach your physio may opt for in treatment.

In addition, one may benefit from Botulinum toxin treatment, which can cause prolonged muscle relaxation through inhibition of acetylcholine release.  This treatment may offer some advantages over the current treatments for myofascial pain syndromes, by providing a longer sustained period of pain relief.

Botulinum Toxin for Muscle Tension

Botulinum Toxin Type A works by blocking neural impulses to the muscles in the injected area. As a result, the muscles relax and muscle spasms — sudden, involuntary contractions of the muscles — are no longer able to occur.

Anyone who suffers from severe, chronic muscle spasms may be an ideal candidate for treatment with BOTULINUM TOXIN ® . Candidates though must be realistic in their expectations. Though BOTULINUM TOXIN ® injections are effective in treating muscle spasms in many patients, results do vary among those treated.

The most rewarding benefit received from botulinum toxin injections for muscle spasms is a relief from pain and discomfort. Botulinum toxin has long been proven to provide safe and successful relief from these types of afflictions, and in many cases, treatment with BOTULINUM TOXIN ® is less expensive and less invasive than other therapies, including surgery.

Unfortunately, the effects of treatment with BOTULINUM TOXIN ® are temporary. Periodic retreatment is necessary to maintain the therapeutic results.

The complications following BOTULINUM TOXIN ® treatment are minor. Nevertheless, side effects do occur in some individuals.

BOTULINUM TOXIN ® injections for neck spasms (or cervical dystonia) are highly successful in relieving pain and returning normal neck movement and range. Cervical dystonia is characterized my abnormal, sustained posturing of the head and neck caused by involuntary contraction of the muscles. The cause of cervical dystonia is unknown, but the condition can be aggravated by walking or during periods of stress.
